To God Be The Glory

Fanny J. Crosby has written more than 8,000 songs making her one of the most prolific hymn writers.  While many of her songs are popular, this one stood out to me as one with many references to scripture.  The repeated phrase "great things He has done" reminded me of Mark 7:37 (speaking of Christ) They were utterly astonishedsaying, "He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

To God Be the Glory
by Fanny J. Crosby

To God be the glory, great things He has done;
Philippians 4:20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 71:19 For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
Of Christ in 1 John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Romans 10:13 for "whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Psalm 106:1 Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let the earth hear His voice!
Jeremiah 22:29 "O land, land, land, Hear the word of the LORD!"
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Psalm 113:1 Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, Praise the name of the LORD.
Let the people rejoice!
1 Chronicles 16:31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns."
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
Of Jesus in Revelation 1:6 and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father - to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 126:3 The LORD has done great things for us; We are glad.

Refrain

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
1 Corinthians 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
To every believer the promise of God;
Ephesians 3:6 to be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel,
The vilest offender who truly believes,
Luke 18:13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!'
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Luke 23:42-43 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Jesus said in John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Refrain

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
Of Jesus in Luke 4:22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "Is this not Joseph's son?"
Jesus said in Luke 8:39 "Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
Of Jesus Christ in 1 Peter 1:8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Refrain

  1. Hi! This is great. Thank you so much for this! I am a homeschool mama of two young boys. I get the privilege of teaching hymns to our co-op group. We don't just want our children to learn to sing the song, we really want them to understand what the hymn means and the correlated scriptures. I am going to use it tomorrow in class.
