In Christ Alone

I had planned to post an older hymn today, but this song was on my mind this morning.  While it is a contemporary Christian praise song, it really is more of a hymn with a regular meter and deep theological content.  I included a YouTube version for those of you who are not familiar with this gem.

In Christ Alone My Hope is Found

In Christ Alone
by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Colossians 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
Acts 4:8-12 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers and elders of the people, if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead -by this name this man stands here before you in good health. "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
Psalm 46:10 "Cease striving and know that I am God ; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
My Comforter, my All in All,
Of Christ in 1 Corinthians 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
here in the love of Christ I stand.
1 Corinthians 15:1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
Of Christ in Colossians 2:9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Matthew 26:67-68 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, and said, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
Hebrews 7:26-27 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
For every sin on Him was laid;
1 Peter 2:24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Here in the death of Christ I live.
Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Jesus says in John 9:5 "While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
Matthew 28:5,6 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid ; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. "He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrew 2:14,15 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:18,19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of hosts has sworn saying, "Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand,
Psalm 103:19  The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Jesus says in John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Philippians 3:20,21 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.

  2. I heard this song on the radio again today and hearing "Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand" reminded me of Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  3. I cannot sing this song without crying. It always brings to mind my Daddy and brother who are waiting for me in heaven. Thank you so much for posting scripture for this amazing song. It has been a wonderful devotional time for me this morning.

  4. This was one of the songs I sang when my husband was missing and held by those who wanted to kill him. It is a song I sing in memory of our friends who were shot for their faith. I sing it to remind myself of truth and give myself strength to go on. We stand in His power, and not even death can stop us because He has conquered death. On the day I got up and knew I had to tell my kids their daddy was captured, I was shaking. I looked in the mirror, and the pressure was enormous. Then I looked up and said firmly, "You have not won. Even if he is killed, you have not won. Christ won that victory when He died and when He was raised from the dead. You have already been defeated" Immediately that awful pressure left, and I was left in the presence of a very present God to go about my task of breaking the news to some tender hearts. Thankfully, for us, we received a miracle. He was rescued. Yet we have friends who didn't get rescued from death, but this song still rings so very true as I think of them, too.

    2. Thank you for sharing your story. It is such a great example of how our faith depends on the Lord and not our circumstances. It is so difficult to trust Him in the trenches, but if we don't trust Him during those hardest times, why trust Him at all. I'm so thankful your husband was rescued. It reminds me to pray for other believers around the world.
