In Christ Alone
I had planned to post an older hymn today, but this song was on my mind this morning. While it is a contemporary Christian praise song, it really is more of a hymn with a regular meter and deep theological content. I included a YouTube version for those of you who are not familiar with this gem.

Hebrews 7:26-27 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrew 2:14,15 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. For I am His and He is mine - Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

Your blog would make for an awesome Sunday School class.
ReplyDeleteI heard this song on the radio again today and hearing "Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I'll stand" reminded me of Philippians 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
ReplyDeleteI cannot sing this song without crying. It always brings to mind my Daddy and brother who are waiting for me in heaven. Thank you so much for posting scripture for this amazing song. It has been a wonderful devotional time for me this morning.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you were edified by it. There is power in His Word. Thanks for the encouragement.
DeleteThis was one of the songs I sang when my husband was missing and held by those who wanted to kill him. It is a song I sing in memory of our friends who were shot for their faith. I sing it to remind myself of truth and give myself strength to go on. We stand in His power, and not even death can stop us because He has conquered death. On the day I got up and knew I had to tell my kids their daddy was captured, I was shaking. I looked in the mirror, and the pressure was enormous. Then I looked up and said firmly, "You have not won. Even if he is killed, you have not won. Christ won that victory when He died and when He was raised from the dead. You have already been defeated" Immediately that awful pressure left, and I was left in the presence of a very present God to go about my task of breaking the news to some tender hearts. Thankfully, for us, we received a miracle. He was rescued. Yet we have friends who didn't get rescued from death, but this song still rings so very true as I think of them, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your story. It is such a great example of how our faith depends on the Lord and not our circumstances. It is so difficult to trust Him in the trenches, but if we don't trust Him during those hardest times, why trust Him at all. I'm so thankful your husband was rescued. It reminds me to pray for other believers around the world.
