Old Testament Timeline Resources: Helping Students See the Big Picture of the Bible
Do your students know lots of Bible stories but struggle to understand how they fit together?
Many children can tell you about Noah, Moses, Samson, David, Daniel, and Esther. They may know dozens of stories from Sunday School, church, homeschool lessons, and family devotions. But when asked where those people fit in the overall story of the Bible, many students aren't sure.
Questions like these often reveal the problem:
- Why was Daniel living in Babylon instead of Israel?
- What exactly were the judges?
- Did David live before or after Moses?
- How do the prophets fit into Israel's history?
- Which books of the Bible happened during which events?
The issue isn't that students lack Bible knowledge. Often, they simply lack a framework for organizing what they know.
Why Students Struggle with Bible Chronology
One lesson from my favorite education course in college has stayed with me for years. My professor frequently emphasized that students need a framework on which to hang their knowledge. If information is simply piled into their minds without connections or organization, it becomes much harder to understand and remember.
Think about the difference between a list of facts about your ancestors and a family tree. The family tree provides a framework that helps you see relationships and understand how everything fits together.
The same principle applies to Bible learning. The framework of a Bible timeline acts a tree on which to hang the individual facts. As a result, connections are easier to make.
As I watched my own children learn Bible stories through church, camp, and home Bible study, I realized they knew many individual stories but lacked a scaffolding for understanding how those stories connected. They knew about Samson but didn't understand why Israel had judges. They knew about Daniel but didn't understand how Israel ended up in Babylon. They knew many details but struggled to see the big picture.
That's what inspired me to create an Old Testament timeline that would help students understand how the people, events, and books of the Bible fit together.
Why Bible Chronology Matters
Understanding the Old Testament timeline helps students move beyond isolated Bible stories and begin seeing God's larger plan.
- When students understand chronology, they can:
- Place Bible stories in their historical context.
- Understand how one event leads to another.
- Connect people to the events happening around them.
- Understand why books of the Bible were written.
- See God's unfolding plan of redemption throughout history.
Instead of viewing Scripture as hundreds of separate stories, students begin to see one connected story that ultimately points to Jesus Christ.
