Bible Verses to Precious Precious Blood of Jesus

Bible Verses to Precious Precious Blood of Jesus | scriptureand.blogspot.com

While recently studying the blood of Jesus and its effect on those who believe, I was struck by this hymn that I had sung many times before. It really lined up with what I was learning in my Bible study. Each verse seemed to highlight one of the Bible verses I had looked at.

"Precious, Precious Blood of Jesus" was written by Frances R. Havergal. It was published in Havergal's Loyal Responses: Or, Daily Melodies for the King's Minstrels in 1882. She wrote many familiar and beloved songs, such as "Like a River Glorious," "Take My Life And Let It Be," and "I Gave My Life For Thee." Her love for Jesus and her gratitude for His death to provide her salvation shines through in her poems and songs.

I was introduced to this song in Hymns of Grace and Truth, but I later discovered that some of the verses had been altered. I am including the version from the Hymns of Grace and Truth (verses 1-7 below) since those are the ones that were the cause of the hymn study. However, I am including a few of the other verses from Havergal's original 1882 version because of their theological value as well. Although there are many versions of this hymn and many different tunes, the one I am familiar with is below. I love this tune's simplicity, emphasizing the simplicity of the belief that Jesus' blood is what saves believers from their sin.

Precious, Precious Blood of Jesus

by Frances R. Havergal

Verse 1:
Precious, precious blood of Jesus,
Shed on Calvary;
Shed for rebels, shed for sinners,
Shed for me.
Jesus said in Matthew 26:28 (KJV) For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Verse 2:
Precious, precious blood of Jesus,
All the price is paid;
Perfect pardon now is offered,
Peace is made.
1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
Colossians 1:19-20 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Verse 3:
Precious, precious blood of Jesus,
Jesus, God's own Son,
Telling that the work is finished;
All is done.
John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Verse 4:
Precious, precious blood that cleanseth
All who come to God
This the sinners only title—
Jesus’ blood.

Precious, precious blood that shelters
From the wrath to come.
Gives the sinner right to enter
That bright home!

Verse 6:
Precious, precious blood of Jesus!
Theme in glory bright!
Thro' it saved ones walk and worship
In the light.
Hebrews 9:13-14 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
1 John 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Verse 7:
Though thy sins are red like crimson,
Deep in scarlet glow,
Jesus' precious blood can make them
White as snow.
Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the Lord, Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.”

Additional verses from Havergal's 1882 original version:
Verse 8:
Now the holiest with boldness
We may enter in,
For the open fountain cleanseth
From all sin.

Hebrews 10:19-22 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesusby a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Verse 9:
Precious blood! by this we conquer
In the fiercest fight,
Sin and Satan overcoming
By its might.

Precious blood, whose full atonement
Makes us nigh to God!
Precious blood, our song of glory,
Praise and laud!

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
