Bible Verses for The Lion and The Lamb

Bible Verses for The Lion and The Lamb by Leeland Mooring, Brian Mark Johnson, Brenton Brown from Big Daddy Weave and Bethel Music | scriptureand.blogspot.com

The lion and the lamb are a classic image. We've all seen the pictures of a lion laying next to a lamb in peace. It's usually used as a symbol of the peace, specifically of Christ's coming millennial kingdom (though misquoted from Isaiah 11:6 where the wolf lies down with the lamb and the lion with the calf, but you get the idea).

In Revelation 5, the lion and the lamb come together in a new way. They are both symbols of Christ. The Messiah is first introduced in verse 5 as the Lion of Judah, a reference to Genesis 49:9 when Jacob is blessing his twelve sons.  It seems to be clear that this Lion is the Christ by calling Him the root of David (Isaiah 11:1).  After being hailed as a lion, surprisingly, Peter turns and sees a Lamb standing as if he had been slaughtered. This is clearly Jesus (John 1:29).  That the powerful Lion and the meek, sacrificial Lamb can both refer to the Lord Jesus Christ seems contradictory. The attributes of God often are contradictory. He is both transcendent and near. He is just and merciful. He is three and yet one. Jesus as a Lamb embodies why Christ came in His first coming: to die for the sins of the world. Jesus as a Lion symbolizes why Christ will come again in His second coming: to judge the sins of the world. Praise God that those who have been purchased by His blood will not receive the judgment that we deserve!

The Lion and the Lamb

by Leeland Mooring, Brian Mark Johnson, Brenton Brown

Verse 1:
He's coming on the clouds, kings and kingdoms will bow down
Revelation 1:7 Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen.
Zephaniah 2:11 The Lord will be terrifying to them, for He will starve all the gods of the earth; and all the coastlands of the nations will bow down to Him, everyone from his own place.
Isaiah 49:7 Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, to the despised One, to the One abhorred by the nation, to the Servant of rulers, Kings will see and arise, princes will also bow down, because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”
And every chain will break, as broken hearts declare His praise
Of the redeemed in Psalms 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their bands apart.
About Jesus the Messiah in Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners;
Psalms 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Isaiah 14:27 For the Lord of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

Chorus:
Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah
Revelation 5:4-5 Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”
He's roaring with power and fighting our battles
Joel 3:16 The Lord roars from Zion and utters His voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth tremble. But the Lord is a refuge for His people and a stronghold to the sons of Israel.
Nehemiah said to the Jews in Nehemiah 4:20 “At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
And every knee will bow before You
Philippians 2:9-11 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Our God is the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain
Revelation 5:11-12 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”
For the sin of the world, His blood breaks the chains
John the Baptist said in John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Oh every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Revelation 5:13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

Verse 2:
So open up the gates, make way before the King of kings
Psalm 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come inWho is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.
Our God who calls the saved is here to set the captives free
1 Thessalonians 2:12 so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Jesus acknowledged this prophecy about Himself in Luke 4:17-21 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
2 Chronicles 20:6 and he said, “O Lord, the God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.

Chorus:
Our God is the Lion, the Lion of Judah
He's roaring with power and fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before You
Our God is the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain
For the sin of the world, His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb

Oh every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb

  1. Thank you for this wonderful explanation. I understood the lamb meaning, obviously, but now I finally understand the lion meaning.
